Application Process

The UMMC Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program will participate in the 2026–2027 residency recruitment cycle for residents beginning training in July 2027.

Because the program received initial accreditation after the opening of the current ERAS cycle, applicants were not able to designate a preference signal to UMMC PM&R. The absence of a program signal will not disadvantage applicants during this recruitment cycle.

Applications will be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service, and the program will participate in the National Resident Matching Program Main Residency Match.

Additional information regarding interview invitations and scheduling will be provided to selected applicants.

1. Submit Your ERAS Application
   
   Applicants submit all required application materials through ERAS, including:

   • Curriculum vitae and experiences
   • Personal statement
   • Medical school transcript
   • USMLE and/or COMLEX scores
   • Letters of recommendation
   • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)

3. Interview Process
   
   Selected applicants are invited to interview with faculty and residents. Interviews provide an opportunity to learn more about:

   • Research and scholarly activity opportunities
     Applicants also have opportunities to interact with current residents and ask questions about their experiences in the program.
     
     
4. NRMP Match
   
   Following interviews, applicants and programs submit rank order lists through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Match results are released nationally on Match Day.
   
   
5. Orientation and Onboarding
   
   Matched residents complete onboarding and orientation activities before beginning residency training. Orientation introduces incoming residents to:
   
   
   • Faculty and staff
   • Clinical systems and workflows
   • Educational resources
   • Residency expectations
   • Hospital and training site operations
     
     

Our goal is to ensure new residents feel welcomed, prepared, and supported as they begin their PM&R training at UMMC.

International Medical Graduates

UMMC PM&R welcomes applications from qualified international medical graduates. IMG applicants are reviewed as part of our holistic application process and must meet all institutional and program eligibility requirements.

International medical graduates must be ECFMG certified or meet applicable ECFMG certification requirements for entry into U.S. graduate medical education.

The program is able to consider applicants requiring J-1 visa sponsorship. Applicants must meet all applicable ECFMG and J-1 physician sponsorship requirements and remain eligible for sponsorship throughout training.

We encourage applications from outstanding IMG candidates. Preference may be given to applicants who have successfully completed USMLE Step 3.

Visiting Students

Medical students interested in completing an elective with the UMMC PM&R Residency Program are encouraged to apply through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO®) Program.

Available elective opportunities provide exposure to our clinical training sites, faculty, residents and the breadth of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation practice at UMMC.
